What is ALPR?

Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) or Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) or sometimes just called License Plate Recognition (LPR) are algorithms that can detect vehicle license plates and send the alphanumeric characters on the plate as a data output. 

Some LPR methods use just Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and some use a hybrid approach with Machine Learning and Deep Learning together with OCR. At Sighthound we use Deep Learning for the most accurate, reliable results.

There are three key parts to the process to LPR:

  • Detect a plate in a video or image source (separating it from other objects, characters or text that might also be in the video). 
  • Read the characters on the plate and the state (region) if the vendor supports that
  • Send the metadata via API to a receiving system or display that data in a dashboard or User Interface.

Can I use ALPR in any country?

Yes, you can use ALPR in any country with a system that supports that country's particular license plate design.

Sighthound supports the use of ALPR in over 82 countries and states where Alphanumeric (not a script like Arabic, Chinese, etc) plates are used.  The full list is here.

Can I use my own cameras?

We can't speak to other vendor's ALPR systems, but at Sighthound, yes you can! We are designed to be flexible and adaptable to your systems and environment. 

We sell our own Deep Neural Network (DNN) Camera or if you would like to use your own camera we can review that and/or recommend cameras to use depending on lighting conditions, speed, fixed or mobile, etc. 

We also offer a DNN Node to run our Identifier software and enable your existing IP cameras
